Lipoedema Support Network Ireland is first and foremost a support group for women living in Ireland with lipoedema. It was created in 2023 and is supported by volunteers. Our goal is not only to support women but to help raise awareness of lipoedema in Ireland, and beyond. We strive to do this without compromising our members and their privacy. This page has been created by members that have volunteered their time. Its purpose is to act as a guide to help women in Ireland through their lipoedema journey and to create awareness. If you have any questions relating to this site, please contact us. The Directors have no affiliation with any names (except for their own personal journey), nor do they take responsibility for any recommendations. We have built a trusted list of resources, however, we strongly recommend members supplement this with their own research.

What is Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a chronic disorder of connective and adipose tissue that mainly affects females. It most often appears in the legs, but it can also affect the arms and, as confirmed at the 2025 Lipoedema World Congress, it may occur in other areas of the body, including the abdomen.

Research suggests a hereditary link, and symptoms may be triggered or worsened by hormonal changes such as puberty, hormonal contraception, stress, pregnancy, fertility treatments, and menopause.

Lipoedema is considered a progressive condition. Early recognition and management is important to help reduce the risk of complications such as pain, inflammation, mobility issues, fibrosis, secondary obesity, lymphoedema, and the potential need for high-volume liposuction.
